An extra day of cyclone lead time with NHC use is a major meteorological result (tier 3). Attribution is to WeatherNext Cyclones (0.90). Evidence is Nature peer review (0.70). Realization includes operational guidance, not replacement of national warning authority (0.70). Durability is medium because WeatherNext 3 followed quickly.

What happened

On 6 August 2026 Nature published “Operational tropical cyclone forecasting with AI,” introducing WeatherNext Cyclones (WN-C), a Google DeepMind and Google Research ensemble model for global cyclone track, intensity, and wind structure. Evaluated on 2023–2025 storms, WN-C is reported to give about a day’s extra lead time versus leading operational models—roughly a decade of conventional progress. The National Hurricane Center used the system during the 2025 season, including Hurricane Melissa’s rapid intensification and Jamaica landfall. Google open-sourced WeatherNext Cyclones and WeatherNext 2 weights with the paper. This is a peer-reviewed operational-skill result with documented forecaster use, scored separately from the November 2025 WeatherNext 2 consumer deployment and from WeatherNext 3.

The Nature paper names WeatherNext Cyclones (WN-C) as the operational cyclone model, distinct from WeatherNext 2’s later consumer deployment.
